Crumbs on the kitchen counter, dust on the TV, gunk in the bathroom sink — We can’t stand our houses when they are a mess. But the thought of spending an entire day cleaning it from top to bottom sends me running to the sofa for a nap. After all, in a week, it’s just going to get dirty again.

Home Cleaning

Here are three simple home cleaning steps to help curb those nagging feelings:

Set cleaning to auto or leave it to the professionals

Make friends with the latest effort-saving cleaning tools and products, such as robotic vacuum cleaners and floor washers, and self-cleaning cat boxes, which rake cat poop into cartridges that you replace every week or so. An automatic shower cleaner spiffs up your shower at the touch of a button, and self-cleaning toilet bowl cleaners scrub your toilet every time you flush. We also suggest calling in a professional to help with your cleaning needs, like your rugs, carpets, upholstery and tile & grout.

Sweat the small stuff & zap the dirt fast

Clean drips as soon as they occur, before they dry or soak into surfaces or carpet & rugs. When you spill on your range top or carpet, quickly run a damp sponge over the (hot) surface – before it stains. Dust often so it doesn’t have a chance to build up and harden in corners and crevices.

Pick a focus room & clean in short bursts

Spend another 10 minutes cleaning one room. Clean a different room every day, so eventually your whole house gets attention. Look at the top, middle and bottom of the room, and pretend you’re seeing it for the first time. Tackle the tasks you don’t always get to, like removing cobwebs and dusting plants.

Spring CleaningWhich words do you associate with spring cleaning? Stress and Hard work? A dread-filled ordeal? Corporal Punishment???!! or just ‘Eww…Yuck’! Well, here we are to re-program your beliefs about spring cleaning the house by showing you how easy it can be to transform your home into the spotless abode you desire in just a few simple steps. The main idea is to ‘work smart’ and not necessarily as hard you may think… Let’s find out how.

1. Get the family involved: don’t go solo

The worse part about spring cleaning is the thought of taking the monumental responsibility onto oneself. This will not only drain but also demotivate you even before you begin. The right way to handle the task is by getting the family involved and making it a group responsibility. In this way, maintaining the cleanliness and clutter-free level will be easier apart from the actual clearing and cleaning process being less stressful and quicker for all.

2. Delegate work areas to each family member

The best way to share the work load of spring cleaning, and not get into each other’s way, is by assigning a specific work area to each family member. Delegate a room such as the kitchen, living room etc., home components such as all the windows, shelves etc. or then processes like scrubbing, vacuuming your carpet & rugs and others depending on which works best.

3. Turn on the music and establish a reward to keep everyone in high spirits

Set the mood for a productive family day ahead by playing some peppy tunes in the background. Sing along as you throw, store, scrub, scour, wash and wipe together. Have a sense of humor about it! Don’t take the job too seriously but be assertive enough to set high cleanliness standards: no hoarding! A good way to make sure the kids cover their work areas well, is by offering motivational awards to those who do a good job. Everyone learns, bonds and enjoys themselves while the house gets a good make over.

4. De-clutter unwanted items and have cleaning aides handy

Prior to actual Cleaning Day, plan the actual spring cleaning or de-cluttering session. Getting unwanted items out of the way will make the cleansing process ten times easier. You can donate discarded clothes, toys and even furniture to the Salvation Army and other donation drives. Then stock up on the correct cleaning equipment – brushes, mops, sponges, squeegees, brooms, buckets, vacuum cleaners, spray bottles and the right liquids and detergents. The right tools are essential for convenience and ease of creating a spick and span space.

Or you can always call in the professionals at Koshgarian Rug Cleaners! We believe our dedication to customer service is what has grown our business into what it has become. Owned and operated today by myself and my son Jordon, as Third and Fourth Generation owners and operators we are so proud to provide you with the same level of customer service our family has always provided.

The Koshgarian team got its start many years ago in the wall-to-wall carpet cleaning business. During that time we developed a real expertise in the methods and techniques. These are necessary to clean the highly durable nylon or Olefin carpet that is found in most homes and businesses.

We were captivated by the beauty of Oriental and other fine area rugs that we saw in our customers’ homes. When we discovered that those same techniques were often being used to clean valuable hand-made wool and silk Oriental and other fine contemporary area rugs, we were horrified! Synthetic wall-to-wall carpeting can withstand mechanical scrubbing, strong cleaning agents, high pressure spraying and high temperature cleaning but these techniques can damage fine rugs permanently.

Experience the difference with Koshgarian and see why we continually receive five star cleaning reviews!

Oriental rugs create an atmosphere of upscale beauty, artistry and elegance in your home that can’t be achieved with the average rug. Although these rugs set a high aesthetic standard, they also require a high standard care. Here are nine tips for maintaining oriental rugs.

maintaining oriental rugs

If you have been looking for ways to better maintain your Oriental rug, consider the following helpful tips:

1. Rotate regularly
Although some experts claim that you only need to rotate your rug every one to two years, it is usually best to shoot for rotating every one to two months, if the rug is located in a high traffic area. Doing so will allow for more evenly distributed wear, which will give your rug a more uniform look that will help maintain both appearance and value.

2. Block sunlight
In regards to maintaining oriental rugs in your home or business, over time, sunlight can cause the dye in your Oriental rug to fade dramatically. To prevent premature fading, you should always block sunlight from hitting the rug as often as you can. If this measure is impossible, you should make sure to rotate your rug as frequently as possible to ensure more uniform fading.

3. Flip the rug
Most Oriental rugs have fringes on the end that can become twisted and tangled very easily. It’s important that you avoid combing the fringe to release these tangles, since this can cause damage to the natural fibers of the fringe. Instead, flip the rug end over end to allow the fringe to straighten out more naturally.

This can be done by grabbing one end of the carpet and walking it over the other end. In addition to this process, you should also shake the rug gently to help straighten out the fringe.

4. Vacuum
Although all rugs will require vacuuming, it’s especially important that you regularly vacuum your Oriental rug to prevent the natural fibers from becoming packed down by excess traffic. It is usually best to turn off the beater bar when vacuuming your Oriental rug to prevent runs or tears in the delicate fibers.

5. Spot clean
Stains can easily develop if you don’t immediately spot clean a spill once it occurs. First, you should dab the stain with a dry cloth to soak up all excess liquid. Do not use soap, bleach, or other common cleaning products on your Oriental rug, since this can damage the fibers.

Instead, use only water to cleanse the stain. If water doesn’t remove the stain completely, it is best to consult a professional who specializes in cleaning Oriental rugs to ensure safe and effective removal of the stain.

6. Utilize padding
When you place padding beneath your Oriental rug, it helps to keep it stabilized, protect the shape of the rug, and reduce wrinkling. This not only enhances the value of the rug, but also makes them safer and more comfortable to walk on.

7. Change the pathway
To prevent overly wearing down one region of the rug, you should rearrange your furniture to create new pathways every six months or so. This will allow for more even wear, increasing the lifespan of the rug.

8. Professional washing
Experts recommend having your Oriental rug professionally washed every three to five years to prevent dirt and soil buildup and to fully restore the rug’s natural fibers. With the help of a professional rug cleaner, you can extend the life of the rug and enjoy better comfort and quality throughout your use.

9. Air it out
Moisture buildup on your rug can have devastating effects in the form of mold and mildew growth. To prevent buildup and reduce the presence of odor, hang your Oriental rug out to dry outside for a few hours every six months, or every time your rug comes in contact with moisture.

Oriental rugs are beautiful but they are not cheap. If you own one of these expensive beauties, it is advisable to put a few measures in place. Measures that will help extend the life of your rug and keep rug fading to a minimum.

The first thing to keep in mind is that ultraviolet light is the real cause of fading. The other parts of the light spectrum don’t really damage your rug. Limiting the rug’s exposure to UV is key. There are a few things you can do which will make a difference. For example, if you have sunlight coming into the room at certain angles, only the few sections of the rug that get exposed to the sunlight will get faded, resulting in a rug that looks inconsistent with some faded patches and some bright patches. When you rotate the rug, it gets evenly exposed so that the rug fading is gradual and unnoticeable.

After inspecting rugs in many homes over the years, I have come to think that sunlight may be a rug’s principal nemesis—even to be feared, even, than moths. Sunlight streaming through a window directly onto a rug is virtually guaranteed to harm it, whether morning or afternoon, southern or western sunlight. Naturally dyed rugs and synthetically dyed rugs suffer equally. Colors fade unevenly and wool and cotton dry out and become brittle.

rug fading

Most damage is caused by light shining through a window, of course, but often rugs fade from sunlight streaming through a skylight. Sometimes people have no idea what’s happening because it occurs at a time of day when they’re not home. In my own house I once had to replace my Plexiglas skylight with Plexiglas that had been UV filtered. A special word of caution: don’t forget that if the sun is not coming directly through your window now, it may do so at a different time of the year when, for instance, the sun is lower in the southern sky.

Helps with Protection from Sun Light

You can eliminate or prevent the problem by keeping the curtains closed or by having a window film professionally applied (window tints can be applied to your windows which filter out harmful ultraviolet light). This is the most effective and also the easiest thing you can do to keep your rug looking good longer. When you rotate the rug frequently, it prevents extended exposure to the same harmful elements.

If your rug has already suffered fading by the sun, there is still hope that it can be improved. If the fading is merely on the very tips of the pile (and you can determine that by looking closely at it), then washing the rug (professionally) may help the problem by simply abrading the faded tips of the wool. More severe rug fading can sometimes be improved by professional clipping of the entire pile.

Holidays can make even the most rational person wish the man in the red suit had a magic potion with our name on it. With all the stress of cooking, preparation, and gifting, the last thing you want is to tackle is the mess left. If no one thought to give you a gift card for maid service, here are a few ways to handle post-holiday cleaning:

From spilled beverages to plates in the sink, it’s best to deal with messes as you go. While it might seem exhausting to clean as you go, it’s a lot less stressful than facing a mountain of dishes and no clean forks. Spills are less likely to become set-in stains if handled immediately.

Post-Holiday Cleaning

However, there are always at least a few rug or carpet stains that magically appear after the holidays! You obviously want to treat any stains as soon as possible, but sometimes you don’t always notice them right away.

Like the carpets, upholstery can take a beating during the holidays from all of the use and abuse. The earlier you can treat the stains the better, so don’t leave this one for too long!

You will save yourself a lot of energy if you break down the tasks into manageable chunks. Remove the stress of post-holiday cleaning by deciding what must be done now and what can wait. Cleaning your kitchen must be done now, while making your guest bed with freshly laundered sheets can probably wait.

And although, we do try to keep up with the basic bathroom cleaning {especially in the guest bathrooms!} over the holidays, they will definitely be in need of a good deep cleaning afterwards. Scrub the tile in your shower and bath, wipe down the mirrors and the sink, wash the towels, mop the floors, and clean the toilet.

But, seriously. Holiday gatherings are all about togetherness and enjoyment of the good times. So, the last tip is this: ask for the help of a professional! Treat yourself and your family to a clean house and a relaxed environment when they next get home. That leaves time for you to get your not-so-New-Years-resolutions set into motion.
